Opportunity Snapshot

This newly created and unique role offers you the opportunity to make a difference at both the tactical and strategic levels, and to join a stable government contractor with more than 30 years of growth and success. You will join just as we move our corporate offices from California to a brand new, attractive facility in Clarksville, Tennessee. One thing that won't change in that move is our collaborative, congenial culture; we have a high number of long-tenured employees, many of whom will relocate with us.

You will oversee administration of all benefits in multiple sites, coordinating with local HR representatives, including maintaining the right strategic balance between controlling costs and maintaining our competitive ability to attract and retain top quality talent. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have significant benefits management and administration experience, including delivering standup presentations to employees. Quick question for you - click here We're looking for a professional who is willing to "roll up the sleeves" but also brings ingenuity and foresight to developing and implementing benefits strategy. Experience promoting proactive wellness programs is a strong plus.

Founded in 1977, DEL-JEN Inc. provides support services to the US Government. Principally supporting the Department of Defense and the Department of Labor, we have earned a reputation for service excellence and our commitment to customer service. We offer a wide range of services, including providing our clients with professional and technically sound facilities maintenance and base operations, construction services, and education & training. If you're not already familiar with Clarksville, it offers a high quality of life and a low cost of living (there's no state income tax in Tennessee, for example).

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A bachelor's degree and five years of experience in benefits administration, OR a master's degree in Human Resource Management and four years experience in benefits administration, OR any appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Experience explaining benefits to employees and responding to employee inquiries. Quick question for you - click here
  • An understanding of ERISA and various regulatory filings (e.g. 5500s).
  • Experience in dealing with insurance companies/brokers.
  • Familiarity with HIPPA, Cobra and other regulatory areas.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a team player approach.
  • Experience with government contractors would be helpful but is not required.
You should expect to travel to some of our larger sites, up to 20% of the time, for open enrollment, new project launches, and more. However, the travel will be sporadic -- you may make three trips one month and then not travel again for four months.

We expect to complete the relocation of our corporate offices by summer 2010, so we can be somewhat flexible with regard to your start date. If you join us earlier rather than later, you will spend some time in Gardena, California (in the greater Los Angeles area, near LAX) getting to know the team and our business.

What's in It for You

High visibility impact -- you'll showcase your ingenuity in controlling costs of a multi-million dollar spend in benefits while ensuring our people get the coverage they deserve. As part of our corporate HR team you'll be involved beyond benefits (we're big on cross-utilization), and you'll partner with our Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Human Resources around the strategy and numbers.

Great work environment -- mutual respect, a collaborative approach, and low politics has resulted in low turnover in our corporate team. At the same time, we know lots of job postings make this claim. Don't just take our word for it: submit your resume and talk to our people to find out for yourself.

The "best of both worlds" -- DEL-JEN became a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation in 2003, but continues to operate as an independent company with the support of Fluor's engineering, procurement, construction, and maintenance experience. While we benefit from the stability and resources of our parent company, we have maintained the family-like atmosphere of a small, entrepreneurial organization.

Great place to live and work -- Clarksville is the fifth largest city in Tennessee and the county seat of Montgomery County. Located just 30 minutes northwest of Nashville, the city is also near Fort Campbell, home to the Army's most-deployed contingency forces. The community maintains its history and heritage, which stretch back to the Revolutionary War. We enjoy a mild climate, a low cost of living and nationally recognized schools.

Excellent compensation -- and you'll play a key role in ensuring this continues to be the case! In addition to a competitive salary and discretionary bonus program, we offer comprehensive benefits that include health and dental coverage, a 401(k) retirement savings plan, paid holidays as well as paid time off (PTO).

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

DEL-JEN currently employs some 1800 people around the US, although that number can change quickly. You will oversee the overall benefits function, and your key objectives will include:
  • Providing special guidance and assistance to all locations on various employee benefit plans. Quick question for you - click here
  • Surveying industries and/or communities to determine DEL-JEN's competitive position in employee benefits.
  • Developing, recommending, and installing approved, new, or modified plans and employee benefit policies, and supervising the administration of existing plans.
  • Developing cost control procedures to assure maximum coverage at the least possible cost to company and employee.
A unique aspect of benefits administration at DEL-JEN is that we aggressively pursue new contracts and, when we win one, there is a flurry of startup activity. Local HR representatives will handle most of the onboarding and benefits activities, although you may travel to help out once in a while. You definitely will "train the trainers" to ensure those local reps are prepared to present information and answer questions.

A big push for you will be open enrollment. You will conduct a series of conference calls with the local HR reps to familiarize them with the materials, coach them on how to present the information, and ensure we are delivering a consistent message. We'll look to you to visit several of our larger sites during this time to deliver presentations and respond to questions. Recognizing the importance that employees play in our success, we make sure benefits information is presented with a personal touch. So, for example, you may schedule a presentation at 6 PM so that new employees can bring their spouses. Many of our sites employ union labor, and you may travel to support the negotiation process.

You also will take over an initiative already underway to promote wellness and healthy living. You'll leverage your creativity in running campaigns (such as sending out healthy living calendars) to raise our employees' awareness of the value of "an ounce of prevention."

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will bring the strategic savvy but also a willingness to get hands-on to achieve your goals. You'll have some support, but like all of us at corporate, you'll have occasion to do the low-tech, high-tech, and everything in between. You also will need to pay close attention to the details of today while thinking ahead to what will happen next month and next year.

If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!

Who We Are

DEL-JEN has been successful for many reasons: a corporate commitment to excellence, consistently delivering quality services and products on time and within budget, and the ability to attract and retain the best employees. We continually strive towards improving the quality of our services.
